Paginating WordPress Posts & Pages

Posted on January 10, 2013 by Karen KuahApril 4, 2014

How to Paginate Your Blog

It will take just a little bit of code to paginate your blog. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have prior exposure to writing code in order to paginate your blog.

The first step is to make sure that your are in the correct setting. Most of the time that I am creating a new post I am in the “Visual” editor. However, to add pagination to your blog you will have to use the “Text” editor.

Once you have finished typing out your blog click on the “Text” tab.  Then insert the following code where you would like each page to end:

<!--nextpage-->

Adding the above code will create a page break at that spot. If you have a 3 page blog you can put it at the end of each of the first 2 pages.  Just make sure to enter the code when you are on the “Text” editor. The picture below will show where the “Text” editor can be found in WordPress.

Once you have delineated the pages, the post or page will show a set of number at the bottom of each page, and also show the current page position.

    One thing that isn't addressed is the Title Tag on each of the pagtanied pages. For instance, if there are 3 pages, each is part of a series, and Google recommends each page have it own unique title. When doing pagination with rel="next" and rel="prev" do the titles of each page read the same? i.e.Page 1: Desktop ComputersPage 2: Desktop ComputersPage 3: Desktop ComputersORPage 1: Desktop Computers Page 1Page 2: Desktop Computers Page 2Page 3: Desktop Computers Page 3

      Google doesn't specify that every page in the series needs to have a different title, so you could keep the titles the same. We use the same title and have no reports of duplicate titles from Google Webmaster, so it would appear that the unique title rule is not applied to paginated pages. If you do choose to have different titles (eg. with page numbers), keep in mind that Google is supposed to consolidate the indexing properties of the paginated pages, it is possible that adding 'page x' to the title would dilute the strength of the keywords in your main title (imagine combining all the titles of the pages into one title). So I would recommend keeping the title the same.
